Wireless World: Mobile Phone Boom Portents

Wireless fidelity, or WiFi, networks being built by local governments represent another growth area. Many cities are installing WiFi networks, because they can be deployed easily by city employees, police and firemen. Fullerton, Calif., operates a network that is quite popular, as are municipal networks in Spokane, Wash.; Los Lunas, N.M.; Lexington, Ky., and Columbia, S.C...... A firm called AirTegrity Wireless is currently "deploying a WiMax pilot program for greater Lake Tahoe" in California and Nevada, a spokesman said.
